The Governing Body

The Governors of Oxspring Primary School are elected as a legal requirement in order for the school to be effective and successful.

The co-chairs of the Governing Body are Mrs Gemma Mahoney and Mr Colin Gratton-Rayson
The vice chair is Mrs Hannah Goldingay-Jordan. You can see the entire Governing Body team further down this page.

Role of Governors

All schools are required by law to have a Governing Body and the Department for Education (DfE) decides what categories of governors there should be and the minimum numbers of these. At Oxspring there is provision for 13 governors, consisting of 2 parent governors; 1 staff governor; 1 Local Authority governor; 8 co-opted governors and the Headteacher. Once they become members, the governors are there to represent the children not the people who elected or co-opted them.

The Purpose of Governance

“The purpose of governance is to provide confident, strategic leadership and to create robust accountability, oversight and assurance for educational and financial performance.

All boards, no matter what type of schools or how many schools they govern, have three core functions:

  • Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
  • Holding executive leaders to account for the educational performance of the organisation and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
  • Overseeing the financial performance of the organisation and making sure its money is well spent.”

Meet our Governors

The governing body is part of the wider leadership team of our school and members work closely with the Headteacher to realise our ambition for the school as outlined in the vision for the learning community. Our governors are a well informed and committed group of people from varying professional backgrounds with a wide range of experiences and interests. We are actively involved in school life and are dedicated to improving the learning opportunities for all our children. We are committed to maintaining and developing our school’s distinctive character, where each child is valued and offered a welcoming, safe, happy and stimulating community environment, enabling the best possible learning outcomes.

Gemma Mahoney
Co-Chair (Appointed 18/10/2017. Reappointed 2021)

Gemma was appointed to the Governing Body as a co-opted governor in September 2017. She lives in Oxspring with her husband and two children who attend Oxspring Primary School. Gemma is employed part-time as an A-Level Business and Economics teacher at a local college.

Gemma joined the governing body at Oxspring Primary School after being a member of the school's Vision working party in 2016. She enjoyed this opportunity to work alongside pupils, staff, parents and governors, hearing their opinions on the school's vision, and the direction they saw the school taking in future.

Gemma became a governor in order to celebrate the achievements of the pupils, recognise the work of the staff and help strengthen Oxspring Primary School's reputation in the community.

He is the Director of Wentworth Pewter (long established pewter gift manufacturers based in Sheffield) Trustee of Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust (Kelham Island, Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, Shepherds Wheel) and a member of various other company boards and trusts.
